What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

If you’re approaching your 65th birthday or planning your retirement, it’s important to understand what Medicare covers so you can protect yourself from unexpected medical costs. Medicare is designed to cover only 80% of your medical costs. The remaining 20% is your financial responsibility. Medicare Supplement Insurance plans can help meet that 20%. What it covers

Medicare Supplement Insurance may help cover health related cost that Medicare does not cover:
  • Medicare Part A: Supplements coverage for inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing home care, hospice care, surgery, home healthcare, and lab tests. You must enroll in Part A, which is free, during the Initial Enrollment Period.
  • Medicare Part B: Supplements coverage for doctor services, medical supplies, outpatient care, and preventative services. You must enroll in Part B during the Initial Enrollment Period or during a Special Enrollment Period that occurs after your Initial Enrollment Period is over and you are no longer covered by a group health plan.

Eligibility

AICPA members, your spouse or domestic partner, and your parents* may apply for the AICPA Medicare Supplement options when you or they become eligible for Medicare, which starts three months before your 65th birthday and up to four months after. You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. If you already have Medicare Supplement insurance, you can apply during Annual Enrollment that happens October 15 through December 7, but with medical underwriting.

*Plans available in most states. Plans are not available to parents residing in Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania.
